Senegal: the rebirth of the rivers

YEAR : 2010 / DURATION : 22MIN / PRODUCTION : Nomades / DIRECTOR : Dominique HENNEQUIN and Thierry SIMONET / VERSION AVAILABLE :FRENCH

A report from Senegal, where an environmental revolution is taking place. The deltas of Senegal, the rivers Sine Saloun and Casamance, were in danger of becoming barren, the fish were running out and the mangroves, home to a vast variety of species, had been used up for fire wood. The areas lush green forests became cemeteries of dried up tree stumps. But all this is changing, thanks to the work of Haidar el Ali and his NGO, Oceanium. The ‘Plant a tree 2009’ campaign mobilised 78 000 people in 323 villages to replant the mangroves. We accompany Haidar el Ali as he travels the country appealing to residents to take care of their environment
