With cost of a year’s tuition hitting the 50 000 dollar mark, America’s most prestigious universities spend a lot of time and money creating a wholesome image for students and their parents. State of the art buildings and facilities, the very best academic staff, and of course a strong sports’ tradition are all vaunted in their costly advertising campaigns.
Yet, as this documentary shows, the reality of life on American campuses is far from wholesome. Under-age drinking is rife, and the fraternities and sororities are pretty much free to do what they want, due to their elevated social status and traditional rules of secrecy. Potential members of these elite societies, reserved for the richest, most popular and politically conservative kids only, are subjected to extensive hazing processes, which can be humiliating, dangerous or even fatal: one student dies during a hazing every year.
We meet the students to hear their take on life at university, the police who battle to keep the underage drinking under control, and a mother whose son died a tragic, excruciating death at the hands of the frat boys during a hazing last year.
